In November 2025, 106 dogs were seized from a residence in Henry, VA. Of those 106 dogs, 3 were retired racing Greyhounds. Though it is unclear as to how these Greyhounds ended up at this residence, what was clear is that they were in dire need of aid. 1 of the Greyhounds was worse than any of the other dogs on the property and became the lone animal cruelty charge in the case. that dog was Steffi. James River greyhounds stepped in to assist Steffi as soon as the shelter medically cleared her for transfer. Ace Mattocks, CRK founder and James River foster home, drove over 8 hours at night to retrieve Steffi from the Henry County Animal Shelter. Steffi was taken into a veterinary clinic so James River could get a better picture of how to help her, but to our surprise- Steffi was able to be sent to her foster home that night! We were able to figure out who Steffi was by deciphering her faded ear tattoos, which we were able to put into the Greyhound database. We figured out everything about her including the fact she had just turned 11! Steffi improved slowly. We followed a strict refeeding protocol, probiotic plan, she was bathed, loved, had her own pet safe heating pad, and several pairs of custom jammies to keep her warm. Her labs were improving and she was close to normal readings, she was also able to retain her body heat at the three week mark! Steffi was flea infested, worm infested, had a body condition WORSE than a 1, and was 11 years old- and yet; she remained spunky and lively and was turning around! Unfortunately, Steffi took a turn for the worse. Steffi was a dog full of personality and life. She always ran to greet Ace and Sam when they arrived home, but one night she didn't. She lost interest in food and seemed dazed. Steffi was taken into the vet, the only options being surgery or euthinasia. With Steffi's age, body condition, and best interest taken into account- Steffi was euthanized on December 8th, 2025. Steffi was loved and cared for deeply and will always hold a special place in our hearts. James River graciously paid for all vet care for Steffi as well as her cremation, so that her remains could be returned to Ace and Sam. Steffi was only with us for a short time, but the impression she left on us will last for our life time. Steffi is the reason we foster.
