Carolina Reaper kennels
Preserve and protect.
Carolina Reaper kennels (CRK) is a small breeding program located in Virginia, just outside of the state capital. Our primary goal in breeding Carolina Dogs is to help promote genetic diversity in the breed, while also preserving the health, temperament, and breed type of the Carolina Dog. In all breeds, it takes multiple people to maintain the integrity of the breed and ensure that there is a future for the breed. In rare breeds, that sentiment is especially crucial to the survival of the breed. Seeing what each dog has to offer the breed and what each dog can individually bring to the table, as well as assessing pairings and lining up which dogs will best compliment each other and aid in strengthening the weaknesses in one another is a must. The Carolina Dog is a breed that has existed in the wild for far longer than documents reveal and they are a living part of history that deserves to be preserved and protected.
Meet the breeder: Ace Mattocks
Hello, my name is Ace mattocks, I am 24 years old, I'm a professional dog groomer, and I am the founder and backbone of CRK! My involvement in dogs goes all the way back to my childhood. I grew up with Italian greyhounds as well as a Galgo espanol. One of my Italian Greyhounds, "Marchwind's I can Only imagine 'Denali' ", was shown in AKC, almost to his championship. I spent much of my childhood attending dog shows and trials. We fostered Italian greyhounds for a breed specific rescue and also fostered retired racing Greyhounds for a short period of time. I got my first Greyhound when I was 16, a retired racer named Broccoli. He was my first service dog and also became my first sport dog. In early 2020, after considering many different breeds, I put a deposit down for a Carolina Dog puppy. The litter was born July 24th, 2020 and the breeder selected my puppy for me based off of my goals at the time. Showing was very loosely on my radar, but I was primarily looking for a service dog since Broc was retiring, as well a sport dog that could do it all. Juke Box is that Carolina Dog, and she has not only succeeded as a service dog and sport dog, but also as a show dog. She is strong, athletic, biddable, and her temperament is truly spectacular. At her first weekend out in UKC conformation in 2022, she earned her UKC CH and became the first and only Carolina Dog to earn a Total Dog Best In Show. In April 2025, I adopted a rescue Carolina Dog named Rooster, who was surrendered to a shelter in Vermont and required a double hip replacement. Rooster is an absolutely wonderful boy and he has only amplified my love of the breed. In December 2025, Juke's half-brother, Tengu, started living with us. he is goofy, confident, and eager to work just like Juke. While being in the dog fancy has had it's ups and downs and I've struggled to find a sense of belonging, I know one thing for sure and that's that I don't want to see this breed become a relic of the past. Carolina Dogs are such a unique breed and they have so much to offer the world. While they aren't suited for every household, I think a closer look at them would reveal that they check a lot of the boxes that most active dog owners have on their "What I want in a dog" list. the Carolina Dog breed needs more homes interested in showcasing the breed and ensuring that they don't become lost to time.
